nCube : Numbers Unemployed by Category

nCubes hold all the statistics presented by the Vision of Britain system, and are defined as combinations of variables. For example, the age-sex tables that appear in most census reports are held as two-dimensional nCubes in which one dimension is a variable categorising sex and the other variable defines a set of age groups. nCubes can have many dimensions, such as age by sex by occupation by cause of death, or just one.

Text:
The Ministry of Labour's Labour Gazette provided monthly statistics on the number of people unemployed in selected towns and 'districts', from 1945 onwards (although the Ministry and the Gazette changed their names periodically). Unfortunately the number of persons insured was not included in the same reports, so it is not easy to compute rates. As well as the total number unemployed, a simple breakdown was provided by age and sex, and that is presented here. The age division was into those over and under 18, and those under 18 were categorised by sex only between 1955 and 1960, so we present the full run of data here in terms of just three categories.
