Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Eye

Eye.-- municipal borough, market town, and par. with ry. sta., W. Suffolk, 19 miles N. of Ipswich and 94 miles NE. of London by rail, on an affluent of the river Waveney, 4100 ac., pop. 2296; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Monday. Eye was the seat of a Norman castle, and of a monastery dedicated to St Peter. Before the introduction of machinery, considerable quantities of pillow-lace were made at Eye. Eye returned 2 members to Parliament till 1832, and 1 member till 1885.
