Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Sarum, Old (or Old Castle)

Sarum, Old (or Old Castle), par. and site of ancient city, Wilts, 2 miles N. of Salisbury - par., 75 ac., pop. 21; was early a place of great importance and considerable extent; was made the seat of a diocese in 1072, and had its cathedral formally opened 20 years later, but fell into utter decay on the removal of the see to Salisbury in 1220, and is now represented by a few remains of ramparts and ditches. Old Sarum sent 2 members to Parliament from Edward I. until 1832.
