Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Dalton-in-Furness

Dalton-in-Furness, market town and par. with ry. sta. (Dalton), in co. and 16 miles NW. of Lancaster and 216 miles NW. of London -- par., 18,190 ac., 1383 tidal water and 18,243 foreshore, pop. 60,598; town, pop. 13,339; P.O., T.O., 1 newspaper. Market-day, Saturday. The par. contains the town of Barrow-in-Furness. Dalton-in-Furness has extensive ironworks, and a considerable trade in malting. A canal of 3½ m. communicates with the sea. In vicinity are the ruins of Furness Abbey.
