Wear, river, Durham; rises near Cumberland border, and flows E. past Weardale St John, Stanhope, Wolsingham, and Wilton le Wear to Bishop Auckland, thence NE. past Durham and Chester le Street to the North Sea at Sunderland; is 65 m. long, is navigable for barges to Durham, and has a basin area of 456 square miles.
