Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for DRAX

DRAX, a township and a parish in Selby district, W. R. Yorkshire. The township lies on the river Ouse, 2¾ miles S by E of Cliff r. station, and 3½ N by E of Snaith. Acres, 1, 332. Real property, £2, 588. Pop., 446. Houses, 106. The parish includes also the townships of Long Drax, Newland, and Camblesforth; the last of which has a post office under Selby. Acres, 6, 474. Real property, £10, 600. Pop., 1, 231. Houses, 285. The property is much subdivided. A priory of Black Canons was founded here in the time of Henry I., by William Paganel; and given, at the dissolution, to the Constables; but has disappeared. The lands around it were often inundated by the Ouse; and are still marshy, but good. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York. Value, £137. Patron, Lady Wheler. The church is good; and there are chapels for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. A school and an alms-house, founded and endowed in 1667 by Charles Reed, have an income of £924.
