SALE, a township-chapelry in Ashton-upon-Mersey parish, Cheshire; on the river Mersey, the Bridgewatercanal, and the Manchester and Altrincham railway, 5¼ miles S E by S of Manchester. It contains the villages of Sale-Moor, Sale-Green, and Brooklands; and has a r.station with telegraph at Sale-Moor, another r. station at Brooklands, post-offices under Manchester at Sale-Moor and Sale-Green, a postal letter-box at Brooklands r. station, and hotels at Sale-Moor r. station and at Sale-Green. Acres, 1, 981. Real property, £19, 284. Pop. in 1851, 1, 720; in 1861, 3,031. Houses, 597. S. Old Hall is the residence of J. Worthington, Esq.; S. Priory, of W. H. Jolly, Esq.; and S. Lodge, of J. Stott Milne, Esq. There are numerous beautiful villas, chiefly residences of Manchester merchants. Market-gardening is largely carriedon. The living is a p. curacy in the diocese of Chester. Value, £513. Patrons. Trustees. The church was built in 1854, is in the early English style, has a tower and spire, and was enlarged in 1860 and 1864. An Independent chapel was built in 1852, at a cost of about £2, 200. There are also chapels for Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, Unitarians, and Roman Catholics; a public cemetery of about 6 acres, opened in 1862; a literary institute; a national school, erected in 1863; and an endowed Britishschool.
