Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for PARRET (The)

PARRET (The), a river of Dorset and Somerset. Itrises near Cheddington, in Dorset; runs 2 miles north-ward, through Perrot parish, to the boundary with Somerset; and goes northward and north-westward, within Somerset, past South Petherton, Muchelney, Langport, Boroughbridge, and Bridgewater, to Bristol channel at Stert point. It makes a total run of about 35 miles; itreceives the Isle at Muchelney, the Yeo at Langport, and the Tone at Boroughbridge; it is navigable up to Lang-port; it expands, in its lower reaches, into considerable estuary; and it is stemmed, in the estuarial part, by atide of 36 feet, sometimes rushing with a "bore" of 6feet. It was known to the Saxons as Pedrida.
