This election was called because the Labour government was split on how to respond to the Great Depression. The Prime Minister, Ramsay McDonald formed a coalition with the Conservatives before the election which led to his expulsion from the Labour party, so he ran as National Labour. The Liberals also split, with some running as "National Liberals", grouped here with McDonald's part of Labour as "Coalition". The coalition parties all supported spending cuts, but the Conservatives also wanted protectionist trade policies. The outcome was a Conservative landslide and large absolute majority, although McDonald remained Prime Minister until 1935.
