Contents:
1951 Educational Statistics (age at termination of education)
Approx. number of rows:
1,471
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1951.

Sources:

  1. The data are taken from tables 25, 'Occupied Population in 3 age sections by 5 terminal ages', for 'Administrative County, County Boroughs, Urban Areas with 50,000 Population or more and Urban Remainder', and 26, 'Occupied Male Population by 5 terminal ages', for 'Urban Areas of Less than 50,000 and Rural Districts'. It is a full transcription of table 26, but a very partial transcription of table 25 which includes data for women, and for two specific age bands: occupied persons under 20, and occupied persons aged 20-24.
  2. National totals have been added from Table 44, "Occupied population in 9 Age Sections each classified by 5 TERMINAL EDUCATION AGES", on p.160 of the 1951 General Tables report.

Notes:

  1. NB these data relate to males only, although data on female education was pubished for towns over 50,000.
  2. The occupied population includes persons returned as "out of work" but excludes persons returned as "retired".
  3. This data covers only England and Wales.
  4. This table was originally called edu_1951. It was amended in January 2010 to be edu_1951_ew to reflect more accurately the area covered by the content.
  5. The value of cnty_unit is set for all rows except the national total. The national total row has both cnty_name and dist_name set to 'ENGLAND AND WALES', cnty_unit set to null, and g_unit set to the ID number for England and Wales.

Checking:

  1. The data were checked to ensure that figures for individual age groups summed to the stated figure for 'all ages' (see constraint below).
  2. The data have been cross-checked against the 1951 age structure data, to ensure that the districts listed are identical.
  3. The data have been cross-checked against the 1951 occupational data as summarised in 'occ_1951_ew' to ensure that the sum of 'all_ages' and 'age_ns' is equal to the figure for the total number of occupied males ('tot_occ').
  4. The data have been checked to ensure that the sum of all_ages for all individual districts match the reported figure for all_ages for England and Wales.
  5. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
  6. This data set is now believed to be error free.
