Sources:

  1. Data for 1911-20 come from the Registrar General's Decennial Supplement 1911-1920, Part III: Tables: Estimated Population, Births, Deaths and Marriages (London: HMSO, 1933), Table 24, "Deaths in the Decennium 1911-1920, by Sex and Age (Civilians only 1915-1920)", for "England and Wales, Classes of Area -- Metropolitan Boroughs, County Boroughs, and Aggregates of Urban and Rural Districts in Administrative Counties" (pp. 299-320). NB this table also include a break down of deaths in the first year of life into "under 1 month", "1-3 months", "3-6 months", "6-12 months", which has not been input.
  2. The data for 1921-30 come from the Registrar General's Decennial Supplement. England and Wales 1931. Part III: Estimates of Population, Statistics of Marriage, Births and Deaths 1921-30 (London: HMSO, 1952), Table 25, "Deaths, Death Rates and Infant Mortality (All Causes) in the Decennium 1921-30, by Sex and Age", for "England and Wales, Geographical Divisions; London, Each Metropolitan and County Borough; County Aggregates of Urban and of Rural Districts" (pp. 344-65). This table does not include figures for the number of deaths in individual years under 5.

Notes:

  1. This table covers London Boroughs, County Boroughs, the aggregate of all other urban districts in each county (i.e. Municipal Boroughs and Urban Districts), and the aggregate of all Rural Districts in each county.
  2. This table was renamed from 'mort_age_lgd' to 'mort_age_ew_lgd_dec' in December 2020 to more accurately describe the contents.

Checking:

  1. That, for each sex, the number of deaths in each age group sum to the stated total.
  2. The counties, County Boroughs and Metropolitan Boroughs have been matched to the AUO. The county aggregates for Rural Districts and for other urban units have not been matched because these entities are not defined in the AUO.
  3. The County and Metropolitan Boroughs have been checked against the GIS coverages, comparing the 1910s with the 1921 LGD polygons and the 1920s with 1931. The only discrepancies are (i) the 1910s include data for Devonport CB, missing from the polygons as it was merged with Plymouth in 1914; and (ii) the 1920s include data for the Inner and Middles Temples within London, which lack a polygon in the GIS.
