Parish level statistics for Scotland taken from the 1911 census

Table ID:
PAR_1911_S     (1252501)
Contents:
Parish level statistics for Scotland taken from the 1911 census
Approx. number of rows:
1,235
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1911.

Sources:

  1. This table holds a complete transcriptions of table I ("Civil Parishes") and IV ("Burghs") from the County Reports of the 1911 Census of Scotland.
  2. The current transcription does not include the small number of notes to the table.

Notes:

  1. These data were originally input by the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis at the Queen's University of Belfast in October 2000. Additional checking and tiding up was done by Humphrey Southall in April 2009 and Paula Aucott in February 2016.
  2. There are two complications with this table. Firstly, it includes some rows giving data for the units as they were defined in 1901. These rows always have null values for 1911 population, etc. and are indicated by a flag in the 'data_are_for_1901' column. The 1911 rows for the same units should always have a value set for CROSS_YR1, i.e. the date of the boundary change.
  3. Secondly, the original tables included tables for the four cities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, which include duplicate data for certain parishes which are also listed in the tables for the ordinary counties. The transcription has been somewhat reorganised so that this double-counting is eliminated: All rows for parish and burgh areas falling within the four cities have been moved from the original counties to form city blocks; the values of SCO_CNTY still hold the traditional county names, but these rows alone have values set for SCO_CITY. NB summing all parish rows in this table will give the totals for Scotland.
  4. In summary, this table contains three kinds of rows: (a) Data for parishes, with a parish name in the area_name column and the area_type column set to 'Parish'. (b) Data for burghs, with a burgh name in the area_name column and the area_type column set to 'Burgh' or 'RoBu' (for Royal Burgh). (c) Totals for counties and cities, with 'TOTAL' in the area_type column. NB Burghs appear as quite separate rows from the parish-level data, and it is impossible to identify relationships between parishes and burghs from the two source tables.
  5. The matching to the AUO is incomplete because the rows moved for the ancient counties to be within the cities are not part of the cities at this date in the AUO. Awaiting guidance on whether to change the table or the AUO in order to complete the matching.

Checking:

  1. The following types of unit appear in the table and have been systematically matched to the AUO
    • Parish (887 areas).
    • Burgh (143 areas).
    • Royal Burghs (RoBu) (68 areas).
  2. All rows meet a pair of simple check-sums ensuring that the reported total populations for 1901 and 1911 match the sums of the genders for each year.
  3. County totals were added to the table in April 2009, and the parish rows now all sum correctly to these county totals. However, the effects of boundary changes mean that 1901 data in certain counties differs from the 1901 total given. These were checked by taking the sum of the areas that had no 1911 data in 1901 and adding them to the given 1901 totals and comparing them to the summed parish rows.
  4. The check rows mentioned in the previous item are currently retained in the table.
  5. Summed Burgh totals by county could not be checked as no landward figures were given.

Columns within table:

ColumnTypeContents
sco_reg Text string (max.len.=24). Name of Division.
sco_cnty Text string (max.len.=28). Name of County. NB this will be the name of the traditional county even when the parish or burgh falls within a city.
area_num Integer number. Number of Parish as listed in original report.
area_name Text string (max.len.=84). Name of place, in this instance a Civil Parish. This column also contains 'TOTAL' where the row is a total for a county or city.
area_type Text string (max.len.=14). Type of area; these actually appear in the header for the column.
part_of Text string (max.len.=5). Set to "P" to indicate that a parish or burgh is split, and that there is other data for the same unit elsewhere in the table.
cross_cnty Text string (max.len.=54). Where the parish is split between two counties
cross_yr1 Integer number. Date of first boundary alteration since the census of 1901 (if any).
cross_yr2 Integer number. Date of second boundary alteration since the census of 1901 (if any).
exclude_city Text string (max.len.=8). Flag: "Y" indicates rows withing county listings which duplicate data included in the reports for cities, which should be excluded to avoid double counting. These rows all have null values of g_unit.
data_are_for_1901 Text string (max.len.=8). Flag: "Y" indicates the row is for the population of the unit as defined in 1901. These rows all have null values of g_unit.
