Sources:

  1. A full transcription of the parish level table - Table C - Acreage and Census population of areas, as constitued at [date] - County Boroughs, Municipal Boroughs, Urban Districts, Rural Districts, Wards and Civil Parishes. The date given in the title relates to individual counties.
  2. This table contains a full transcription of the source table. It only gives total population and does not give gender totals. It was input by Harold Price at the University of Portsmouth in Summer 2023.
  3. The printed table does not include footnotes.
  4. Census data for each county is published in a separate volume. These are the Part II county reports, for example, Census of England & Wales, 1931. County of Bedford (Part II), published in London, in 1934 by HMSO.

Notes:

  1. The figures in these Part II reports represent the area of each administrative unit as it existed after the major changes, giving the 1921 and 1931 Census population that lived within the modified area.
  2. As yet these data do not contain ward ID numbers because they have not been inserted into the AUO for the 1930s.
  3. Where a urban unit is small and has the same name as the single parish it contains there is only one line for both in the published report. This makes matching to the AUO difficult. To alleivate this a row has been added to the table for each parish in addition to the row for the district-level unit. The population figures for the district have been copied across to the parish row so are repeated.
  4. Where an urban unit is larger it contains multiple parishes. Where this is simply a list of individual parishes, one per row they have been transcribed as is. Where there are wards and civil parishes listed, often with the parishes containing more than one ward, each of the civil parishes has had an additional row added to identify it individually, but the figures have not been copied across.
  5. The above actions means that every administrative unit has it's own row in the table. Any sums done with the numbers should take this into account.
  6. Wanstead North ward, part of Woodford parish in Wanstead and Woodford UD, ESSEX has an area given as 'less than 1 acre'. As this text does not work in a numbers column the area for this row has been given as 0 acres.
  7. This transcription is limited to counties Bedfordshire - Kent and those in Wales. It is a work in progress, more is being added currently.

Checking:

  1. The spreadsheet contained column checks for each county. This verified the given county total matched the summed sub-totals of the urban units and rural units.
  2. The numbers in this dataset are not yet checked in Postgres for internal errors. XXX Add more text here once checking script written.
  3. The names of the geographical units were entered as part of this transcription so the names provide an independent listing.
  4. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets. Manual matching was only necessary for units which had changes at multiple dates in the 1930s. All currently loading county, district and parish units match to the AUO except:
    • Wickford parish in Billericay UD, Essex as the relationship is missing from the AUO
    • Penton Grafton in Andvoer RD, Hampshire as the name in the AUO includes a typo.
