1931 Social Class Statistics for Regions (raw data)
Approx. number of rows:
66
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1931.

Sources:

  1. These data were drawn from Table 11 'Areal Distribution of Social Class Mortality Data showing population and deaths by age and social class within urban and rural subdivisions of geographical regions and distinguishing males and married women' from the Registrar General's Decennial Supplement, 1931, Part IIa Occupational Mortality. This is a very partial transcription, carried out by Eileen Longland at QMW in June 1998; the table also contains much more detail on age and on married women.

Notes:

  1. This table contains raw data from the Decennial Supplement, while the more detailed 'soc_1931' table contains statistics computed from the database from the census Occupational Tables. As well as the obvious differences in reporting geography, note that this table concerns the male population aged 16 and up while the occupational data cover males and females aged 14 and up. This difference prevents direct comparison.
  2. General Explanatory Note 4 (p. 189) states 'So far as is possible from the material available Class I purports to represent the professional and generally well-to-do section of the population, Class III, Skilled artizan and analagous workers and Class V, Labourers and other unskilled callings, while Classes II and IV are intermediates comprising occupations of mixed types, or types not readily assignable to the classes on either side.
  3. The data are organised into 'regions' which are defined as groups of counties (see below), but then the figures for each region are further sub-divided into totals for all County Boroughs in the region, all Other Urban Areas, and Rural Districts.
  4. The number of deaths covers the period 1930 to 1932, while the population refers to the 1931 census.
  5. All data refer only to the male population aged 16 and up.

Checking:

  1. The data were checked in two ways. Firstly, checksums were computed based on subtracting all other values from the total to leave zero. Secondly, the total for all areas for both population and death equalled the values given in the report for England and Wales.
  2. The geographical units have not been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer as they refer to aggregates within regions and these are not in the AUO. The g_unit column values are therefore all null. This table was moved across and edited to run on postgres, but no others edits have been done.
