Contents:
Social Class Statistics from the 1951 Census for Scotland
Approx. number of rows:
58
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1951.

Sources:

  1. The Scottish data are taken from Table 10, 'Social Class Distribution of Males and Females (Occupied and Retired)', in Volume IV of the 1951 census reports, Occupations and Industries (HMSO, 1956). The Scottish data was transcribed by Eileen Longland at QMW in May 1998. Unlike the source for England and Wales, this table contains equivalent data for women, which has yet to be transcribed.
  2. The National Totals were added in June 2017 by Paula Aucott and also came from Table 10, just male figures have been transcribed.

Notes:

  1. In the original table, the totals for Scottish counties exclude the populations of the four major cities but include the populations of 'Large Burghs'; for consistency and to ensure that aggregates work correctly, the figures for the Scottish counties were adjusted as they were loaded into the database so as to subtract the figures for any burghs within the county. To obtain the county figures that originally appeared, GROUP BY the cnty_unit field while selecting for type='CO' and type='BU'.
  2. This table was originally called soc_1951 and was a combination of the English and Welsh table together with the Scottish data table. This was amended in January 2010 to follow the 1961/71 convention of dividing the data into one table containing England and Wales, and a separate table for Scotland. This table is now soc_1951_s to reflect more accurately the area covered by the content.
  3. The data covers Cities, Counties and Large Burghs as indicated by area_type:
    • CT: City (4 areas): Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
    • CO_ County (33 areas): Includes data for all burghs, whether or not separately listed, but not data for Cities.
    • BU: Large Burgh (20 areas): These match those listed in the 1951 Industry Table.
Small Burghs, District of County, Landwards and Wards are not listed.

Checking:

  1. The check constraint ensures that the individual social classes sum to the total number of males.
  2. The data was cross-checked against the 1951 data in the 'age_lgd' table to ensure that the list of districts was identical, and that the overall total populations are identical (but NB these were not in the original published table).
  3. The figures for 'Total Males (Occupied and Retired) aged 15 and over' are not identical to the totals for males aged 15 and over in the age structure table, or in the occupations table. There is no explanation for this in the published tables. This means that there is no systematic cross-check that the rows of numerical data relate to the correct district.
  4. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
