Socio-Economic Group Statistics for divisions from the 1961 Scottish Census
Approx. number of rows:
31
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1961.

Sources:

  1. The data for Scotland are taken from Volume 6 of the 1961 census entitled 'Occupations, Industries and Work Places', table 28, 'Socio-Economic groups (Numbers and Proportions) of Economically Active Males' pp160-1. This is a transcription from the original tables, which recorded ten percent of the population which we have multiplied by ten to achieve actual population figures.

Notes:

  1. The data covers all Scottish divisions and was entered in Portsmouth by Rachel Granville in Spring 2002.
  2. The original table also includes proportions but these have not been transcribed as they can easily be calculated.
  3. The 1961 SEG data in this table is given only for regional divisions. "Figures for cities Large Burghs, Small Burghs, Districts of County, Conurbation Centre, New Towns have been published separately."

Checking:

  1. The total population figure was compared to the sum of the categories G1-G17 for each area.
  2. The four divisions appearing in this table have now (May 2023) been defined in the AUO, so g_unit is populated for these and for the Scottish national totals.
