In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Beaminster like this:

Beaminster, par. and market town, W. Dorset, 5 miles SW. of Crewkerne ry. sta. and 6 miles NE. of Bridport, 5118 ac., pop. 2130; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Thursday. It is situated in a good agricultural district, and has some mfrs. of sacking and pottery. The town has been three times destroyed by fire (1644,1684, and 1781). The par. contains Beaminster Manor.
