In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Scargill like this:
SCARGILL, a township in Barningham parish, N. R. Yorkshire; 4 miles S of Barnard-Castle. Acres, 4, 817. Real property, £1, 674. Pop., 93. Houses, 19. Scargill Cliff-is a picturesque object, and figures in Sir Walter Scott's " Rokeby" as the retreat of Guy Denzil and his desperate crew.
