Unst, Shetland

In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Unst like this:

Unst, island and par., in the extreme N. of Shetland - par. (comprising the islands of Muckle Flugga, Unst, and Uyea), 29,856 ac., pop. 2181; island, pop. 2173; P.O., T.O., at Baltasound, 43 miles NE. of Lerwick. The island is 12½ miles long, and from 2½ to 6 miles broad. The coast is much indented, and the headlands, especially in the N. ...

and W., are rocky and precipitous. The surface is moderately level, and in the S. attains a maximum alt. of 703 ft. Much of the soil is excellent, and produces good crops. Fishing affords the chief employment. Shetland hosiery is the staple mfr.
