In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ochiltree like this:
Ochiltree.-- par. and vil. with ry. sta., mid. Ayrshire, on Lugar Water - par., 18,328 ac., pop. 1493; vil., 1½ mile N. of sta. and 11½ miles E. of Ayr, pop. 523; P.O.
