In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Fetteresso like this:
Fetteresso, coast par. and vil., Kincardineshire, -- par., 27,256 ac., pop. 5541; the par. comprises part of the town of Stonehaven--pop. of town part, 2249; the vil., with ruins of ancient church (St Caran's), is on Carron Water, 1½ mile W. of Stonehaven; a little W. of vil. is Fetteresso Castle (rebuilt 1830), formerly a seat of the Earls Marischal.
