In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Dirleton like this:
Dirleton, coast par. and vil. with ry. sta., N. Haddingtonshire -- par., 9146 ac., pop. 1506; vil., 1½ mile NW. of the ry. sta. and 2½ miles SW. of North Berwick, pop. 343; P.O.; beside the vil. are the ruins of Dirleton Castle, a 12th century stronghold.
