In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Alvah like this:
Alvah, par., on NE. border of Banffshire, 11,888 ac., pop. 1356; the picturesque Bridge of Alvah is 2 miles S. of Banff; post-town, Banff.
