In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Braintree like this:

Braintree, par. and market town, NE. Essex, on river Blackwater, 6 miles NW. of Witham junction and 44½ miles NE. of London by rail 2282 ac., pop. 5182; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Wednesday; has silk and crape mfrs. B. was once a seat of the Bishops of London.
