In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Gowanbank like this:
Gowanbank, a village in St Vigeans parish, Forfarshire, 3½ miles NW of Arbroath, under which it has a post office.
Gowanbank would seem to be almost the same settlement as Colliston, and the location shown on the OS New Popular sheet for Gowanbank is used here for Colliston. However, Groome has Gownbank as being half a mile closer to Arbroath than Colliston, and we take our location for Gowanbank from the modern 1:25,000 map which shows both names.
