In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Kirkdale like this:
Kirkdale, a mansion and an ancient parish of SW Kirkcudbrightshire. Kirkdale House, near the shore of Wigtown Bay, 5½ miles SSE of Creetown, is a splendid 18th century edifice of polished granite in the Italian style, after designs by Robert Adam, surrounded with beautiful grounds, and commanding strikingly picturesque views. ...
Its owner, Frederick Rainsford-Hannay, Esq. (b. 1810; suc. 1856), holds 3938 acres in the shire, valued at £2186 per annum. The ancient parish was annexed in 1636, partly to Anwoth and chiefly to Kirkmabreck. Its church stood in the vale of a burn falling into Wigtown Bay, ½ mile below Kirkdale mansion; a857 the graveyard is still in use.—Ord. Sur., sh. 4,
