In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Juniper Green like this:
Juniper Green, a village in Colinton parish, Edinburghshire, on a high bank above the left side of the Water of Leith, with a station on the Balerno loop-line (1874) of the Caledonian railway, 1 mile ENE of Currie and 5½ miles SW of Edinburgh. It has a post office under Currie, and two public schools; consists in great measure of villas and pretty cottages; and, with charming environs, including a long reach of the pictur-esque dell of the Water of Leith, is a favourite summer retreat of families from Edinburgh. ...
A new Free church, erected in 1880 at a cost of £3000, is in the Gothic style of the 13th century, and contains 620 sittings. Pop. (1831) 338, (1861) 531, (1871) 716, (1881) 1018.—Ord. Sur., sh. 32, 1857.
