In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Roydon like this:

Real property, £1,057. Pop., 196. Houses, 42. The manor belongs to the Hon. Mrs. Howard. The living is a rectory, annexed to Castle-Ris ing, in the diocese of Norwich. The church is Norman, and was recently restored. There is a national school.
