In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described West Marden like this:
MARDEN (WEST), a tything in Up-Marden parish, Sussex. It formerly was a chapelry; but its place of worship has disappeared. It has a post office under Emsworth.
