In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Penydarren like this:

PENYDARREN, a suburb of Merthyr-Tydvil, in Glamorgan; on the N side of the town, and within the borough. It has a post-office under Merthyr-Tydvil; and is a seat of iron-works, which long employed about 2,000workmen.
