In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Pen Y Ghent like this:
PENNIGANT, or Penyghent, a mountain in W. R. Yorkshire; 6½ miles E of Ingleborough, and 7 N of Settle. It rises to an altitude of 2, 270 feet; and has, in its skirts, several caves, "swallow-holes, " and curious little glens.
