In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Killingnoble Scar like this:

KILLINGNOBLE SCAR, a curved range of hill in N. R. Yorkshire; overhanging Newton Dale, 8 miles N by E of Pickering. It was noted, in old times, for a breed of large hawks, which were esteemed worthy of the care of kings.
