In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Loch Long like this:

Long, Loch.-- sea-loch, Argyllshire and Dumbartonshire; strikes 17 miles N. and NE. from Firth of Clyde at Holy Loch to Arrochar, 1¾ mile W. of Tarbert on Loch Lomond.
