In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Banagher like this:

Banagher.-- market town, Reynagh par., W. King's co., on river Shannon, 8 miles NW. of Birr ry. sta. and 18 miles SE. of Ballinasloe, pop. 1192; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Friday. The river is here crossed by a fortified bridge. There is communication by small steamers between Banagher, Limerick, and Athlone.
