In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Stradbally like this:
Stradbally, market town and par., Stradbally bar., Queen's co., on river Straid, 6 miles SE. of Maryborough and 7 miles NW. of Athy - par., 2466 ac., pop. 1587; town, pop. 1254; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Saturday. Stradbally Hall, seat, is in the vicinity.
