In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ards like this:
Ards, Lower and Upper, 2 bars., co. Down, occupying the whole peninsula which extends between Lough Strangford and the Irish Sea, 38,454 ac., pop. 21,598; and 29,705 ac., pop. 10,980.
