In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Dingle like this:

Dingle, seaport town and par., W. co. Kerry, on N. side of Dingle Bay, 27 miles SW. of Tralee ry. sta. and 30 miles W. of Killarney -- par., 9097 ac., pop. 3380; town, pop. 1833; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Saturday. It has an excellent harbour, and at one time carried on considerable shipping trade with Spain. A steamer plies weekly between Dingle and Cork. The fisheries are important.
