In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Drumlanrig like this:

Drumlanrig Castle, seat (1689) of the Duke of Buccleuch, on the Nith, in co. and 17 m. NW. of Dumfries, and 3½ m. NW. of Thornhill ry. sta. Drumlanrig Castle is 4 storeys high; it forms a hollow square, and is surmounted with corner turrets. It crowns the last spur of a long ridge (drum) of hill, and is a conspicuous feature in the landscape of Nithsdale.
