In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Morningside like this:
Morningside.-- district and ry. sta., in S. of city of Edinburgh, pop. 9241. In a wall near the church is a large block of red sandstone called "The Bore Stane," in which the royal standard was fixed at the gathering of the Scottish army before the battle of Flodden in 1513. See BOROUGH MUIE.
