SAWBRIDGEWORTH, popularly Sapsworth, a small town, a parish, and a sub-district, in Bishop-Stortford district, Herts. The town stands on the river Stort, adjacent to the Great Eastern railway, 4 miles S of Bishop-Stortford; carries on a considerable trade in malt; had formerly a weekly market; and now has a head post-office, ‡ a r. ...
station with telegraph, and fairs on 23 Apriland 20 Oct. The parish comprises 6, 606 acres. Real property, £16, 465. Pop. in 1851, 2, 571; in 1861, 2, 701. Houses, 561. The manor belonged to Geoffrey Magna-ville; and passed to the Says, the Bourchiers, and others. Hyde Hall is the seat of the Earl of Roden. There areextensive nursery-grounds. A section of the parish, with a pop. of 1, 100, was constituted in 1861 into the chapelry of Highwych. The head living is a vicarage, and that of Highwych is a p. curacy, in the diocese of Rochester. Value of the former, £400; * of the latter, £150. Patron of the former, the Bishop of Rochester; of the latter, the Vicar of S. The parochial church, or St. Michael's, wasrepaired and altered in 1859. The church of Highwychwas built in 1861, and is in the early English style. An Independent chapel was built in 1863; and is in the decorated English style. There are an endowed school, two national schools, and charities £17.—The sub-district contains four parishes. Acres, 12, 385. Pop., 4, 278. Houses, 900.
