In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Hackney like this:

Hackney, parl. bor. and par. (ry. stations, Hackney and Hackney Downs Junction), Middlesex, in NE. of London -- par., 3297 ac., pop. 163,681; bor., including Hackney par. and Stoke Newington par.), 3935 ac., pop. 186,462; Hackney returns 3 members to Parliament -- 3 divisions, viz., North, Central, and South, 1 member for each division; its representation was increased from 2 to 3 members in 1885, when its parl. limits were reduced by the formation of the new parl. bors. of Bethnal Green and Shoreditch.
