In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Poplar like this:
Poplar, par. (ry. stations Poplar and Poplar East India Road), Middlesex, on river Thames, between Lime-house reach and Blackwall reach, in E. of London and in bor. of Tower Hamlets, 1164 ac., pop. 55,077; includes Blackwall and the Isle of Dogs, and contains the East India and West India Docks.
