In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Camberwell like this:
Camberwell, parl. bor. and par., Surrey, in S. of London -- par., 4450 ac., pop. 186,593; bor. (containing also Penge), 5220 ac., pop. 205,243. Camberwell returns 3 members to Parliament -- 3 divisions, viz., North, Peckham, and Dulwich, 1 member for each division; it was made a parl. bor. in 1885.
