In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Bridgend like this:
Bridgend.-- market town with ry. sta., Coyty and Newcastle pars., Glamorganshire, 17½ miles W. of Cardiff and 191 NW. of London, pop. 4153, P.O., T.O., 3 Banks. Market-day, Saturday; has mfrs. of woollen, and trade in corn; also, iron-works, stone quarries, and coalmines.
