Description: | Poor Law Unions were created by the Irish Poor Law Act of 1838. Unions were responsible for providing relief to the poor. As in England and Wales, unions were normally centered on a market town, and their boundaries ignored historic counties and parishes. The poor law was abolished in the Irish Free State in 1925, and in Northern Ireland in 1948. |
