nCube definition

This industrial classification was used in the Industry Reports of both the 1931 Census of England and Wales and the 1931 Census of Scotland, and it is always broken down by gender. The classification is defined in Census 1931: Classification of Industries (London: H.M.S.O., 1929), which notes "The Industrial Classification is based strictly on the nature of the product, or, in the case of non-manufacturing industries, on the type o service rendered, and no consideration of personal occupation enters int...

o it." (p. i). Some Orders were broken down into Sub-Orders, and all were then divided into "Groups", but the latter were listed only for counties and large towns.
