nCube : Generalised agricultural crop classification for 1866-1970.

nCubes hold all the statistics presented by the Vision of Britain system, and are defined as combinations of variables. For example, the age-sex tables that appear in most census reports are held as two-dimensional nCubes in which one dimension is a variable categorising sex and the other variable defines a set of age groups. nCubes can have many dimensions, such as age by sex by occupation by cause of death, or just one.

This system for crop classification has been designed by the GBH GIS project to enable comparison of all farm censuses from 1866 to 1970. This inevitably means including many crops in a large 'Other' category. Although Farm Census data for Scotland as well as for England and Wales have been converted to this structure, the Scottish classification for 1961 fits particularly poorly, not identifying rye or beans and peas. Hops are not identified in the Scottish classification for 1931 or 1961, but there were no hops at all in Scotland in 1871 or 1901.
