Contents:
Industry statistics for counties and large towns in England and Wales for 1931
Approx. number of rows:
106,191
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1931.

Sources:

  1. The data were transcribed from Table 2, 'INDUSTRIES (FULL LIST). MALES AND FEMALES, AGED 14 YEARS AND OVER, EXCLUSIVE OF "OUT OF WORK".', pp. 12-181 in Census 1931: England and Wales: Industry Tables (London: HMSO, 1934).
  2. In 2006, as part of work for the Environment Agency on contextualising the Land Utilisation Survey of Great Britain, Paula Aucott created a limited transcription, only of County Totals and only of (a) the totals for each of the 22 Orders and (b) detailed Groups just for Order II, Agriculture.
  3. A complete transcription was made of all categories and including data for individual towns. In spring 2015 this was limited to eleven counties in the South East, but was extended to cover the rest of the country in summer 2015.
  4. The national totals were added in March 2017 by Harold Price in Portsmouth.

Notes:

  1. The county totals used always include any associated County Boroughs, and the figures for the West Riding include the City of York. National totals have not been included, but are easily computed using the 'NATION' codes.
  2. A note to the England and Wales table says: 'Unlike the Industry Tables both for 1921 and for 1951 and later, the areal classification is by each person's area of enumeration and not necessarily, therefore, by area of business.'
  3. When the data were loaded into the database, rows that were empty because they came from the original restricted transcription project were eliminated, and then all remaining null values were replaced by zero.

Checking:

  1. The sum of the number of employees in each order was compared with the reported 'Total in Industries'. This check was met for both sexes for all units.
  2. The computed sum of the Groups within each Order with the reported total for the Order. This check was met for both sexes for all units, except for Nottinghamshire females employed in agriculture where the sum of the parts is 532 while the reported total is 534.

Columns within table:

ColumnTypeContents
col_seq Integer number. Number placing units in the order in which they appear in the original table. This is added by us as the data are loaded, so the value for a given area will change as additional data are loaded.
nation Text string (max.len.=6). Single-character code for nation: 'E' = England, 'W' = Wales.
admc_name Text string (max.len.=42). Name of the Administrative County as listed in the report.
adm_cnty Text string (max.len.=42). Standardised name of the Administrative County, partly to match names in table for small towns.

industry Text string (max.len.=134). Exact transcription of the label for the row. This can identify an Order, sub-Order, a detailed Group, or the five rows holding totals and 'Status Aggregates' at the start of the table:.
  • Total Population--All Ages
  • Aged 14 years and over: Total Population
  • Aged 14 years and over: Unoccupied and Retired
  • Aged 14 years and over: Out of Work (excluded from Industry classification)
  • Aged 14 years and over: Total in Industries (excluding persons out of work)
It is included here mainly for labelling purposes, and analytic work should generally use the more structured information held in ind_1931_codebook.
group_code Integer number. Integer value identifying the Group within the industry; null if the row is a total for an Order or sub-Order.
males Integer number. Number of males employed.
females Integer number. Number of females employed.
