In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Peterculter like this:
Culter, ry. sta., in co. and 8 miles SW. of Aberdeen; ½ mile from sta. are Culter Paper Mills; ½ mile N. of sta. is Culter House, a venerable pile, of time of Robert I.
