In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Tranent like this:
Tranent, police burgh and par., Haddingtonshire, 1¼ mile SE. of Prestonpans ry. sta. and 9½ miles E. of Edinburgh - par., 5919 ac., pop. 5198; burgh, pop. 2235; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; has an iron foundry and agricultural implement works; collieries are in the vicinity.
